Founded in the 11th century as a motte and bailey, it was fortified in stone in the 12th. The castle was destroyed during the 30 Years' War, and was razed in the 1860's. This is one of the oldest castles in Alsace, and originally stood on the bank of a meander of the Rhine.

The extant tree-covered mound is around 100 meters in diameter and 5 meters high, surrounded by a now dry moat about 2 meters deep. There are remains of a wall on the west side, and scattered masonry pieces throughout.

The ruins lie between the villages of Homburg and Petit-Landau, and are best accessed from the D468. There is space to park and an information panel at the NW corner of the site.
