Tahlequah Historicl Highlights
Cherokees
Folklore suggests the name "Tahlequah" was derived
from a Cherokee phrase "Tah-Ah-Le-Quah",
"Two are enough" or "This will do". The story refers to
the presence of only two agents instead of the intended
three who were selected to meet and choose a permanent
capital site for the Cherokee within the region known
as Indian Territory following the forced removal from
ancestral lands in the southeastern United States.
Among the earliest towns established in the territory,
Tahlequah was designated by the Cherokees as a
160 acre township in 1843. Upon statehood in 1907,
the town became the county seat of Cherokee County.
