Le château de Longchamps a le mérite d'être une des rares demeures d'importance d'époque Premier Empire (1810) qui ait existé en Belgique, en un temps où dans l'ancien Pays de Liège, le style Louis XVI continuait sa carrière.

Feu le Baron Maurice de Sélys Longchamps, grand amateur d'Art, avait meublé ce château en harmonie avec l'époque de sa construction. Le corps de logis rectangulaire impose ses lignes horizontales. Un péristyle, des toitures cachées par un attique de treize fenêtres régulièrement percées le caractérisent. Mais la véritable curiosité de ce château est ce petit pavillon en forme de tente qui rappellerait les campements établis lors des campagnes militaires de Napoléon. Des stucs imitent des tentures drapées. Un vaste parc a conservé à cette demeure le témoignage charmant de sa grandeur passée. Longchamps fut bâti pour Michel Laurent de Sélys (1759-1837), qui fut président de la nouvelle administration municipale de Liège en 1795, l'année de la réunion de la principauté de Liège à la France, et maire en 1800, sous le Consulat.

Baron Maurice de Sélys-Longchamps, een groot kunstliefhebber, had het kasteel ingericht in harmonie met de bouwperiode. De hoofdpartij van het rechthoekige gebouw legt haar horizontaal tracé op. Een zuilengang, en daken verborgen door een attiek van dertien regelmatig versneden vensters, vormen de meest opvallende kenmerken.

Longchamps werd gebouwd voor Michel Laurent de Sélys (1759-1837) voorzitter van de nieuwe stadsadministratie te Luik in 1795, het jaar van de alliantie tussen het prinsdom Luik en Frankrijk.
