Het Newfoundland gedenkteken met zijn omgeving, bestaande uit onder andere Canadapopulieren, is beschermd als landschap.
On the advice of the royal commission for monuments and sites (KCML), land was set aside as a memorial to honour the sacrifice of the people of Newfoundland. In 1931, some of this land was provided by Antoinette Marie Josephine Valerie Ghislaine Vercruysse, wife of Charles Reyntjes. Since the early 1930s, this green space has included relevant landscaping such as the poplar tree, a species common in Newfoundland.
At the time of the Great War, Newfoundland was an independent nation. In 1949, Newfoundland became a province within Canada, losing its sovereignty. Therefore, today the memorial to Newfoundlanders is also considered a memorial to Canadians.
