The Tennessee State Capitol building in Nashville was begun in 1845 and completed in 1855. The building originally had limestone columns along its front façade. Despite surviving the Civil War, these columns proved no match against time and weather. By 1957 the need for replacement became apparent. These columns were dismantled, but were saved and donated to various communities and organizations within the state.
Several sections are still on display on the northwest side of the Capitol in Nashville.
When the remains of the Unknown Civil War Soldier were unearthed and then scheduled for reinterment in Rest Haven Cemetery, the State was approached about donated sections of the columns. What you see are several mid sections and a column topper.
