From having had a father who drew, and water-colour painted ferns and fungi in his youth, I guess I have also taken an interest in all things of Nature.

This metal, printed sign is for "Ferns", Plants Without Flowers
In the Park there are:
* tree-ferns
* bracken fern
* maidenhair ferns
* water ferns
* staghorns
* elkhorns

"The biology of these ferns has changed little over the past 200 million years.

"Ferns are spore-bearing plants, so they don't have flowers or seeds. Their spores are shed from the underside of the fern fronds, and germinate. Small growths (prothalli) are produced and remain on stones or debris on the forest floor. Fertilisation of these occurs on rainy days, and this is when the 'seedling' begins to growl.

"Fern fronds are not a particularly nutritious bush tucker, but young fronds were boiled and eaten. Water fern roots provided useful carbohydrate when mixed with nuts, fruits and animal protein."
