Dr Sun Yat-sen (1866-1925) was an intellectual, who provided the ideological basis for the anti-Manchu dynasty revolutionary movements which opposed the then government of China. He campaigned for this cause in China itself, and amongst the Chinese diaspora of south east Asia. In 1911 he was elected as the provisional president of the provisional government of China. The difficulty he faced was that, while he was respected, his government had little power. This provisional government quickly degenerated into civil conflict, from which was to eventually emerge the communist government of mainland China, and its Taiwanese counterpart.

With this being said, for various reasons and in various interpretations, Dr Yat sen is regarded highly by both the mainland and Taiwanese governments, and on a wider setting, the peoples of both nations. Politically, could be described as a well meaning 'idealist', and even a socialist. Out of step with the warlords, armies and merchants, who effectively ruled China during his life, however, where would we be without idealists?

This Museum centres on the life and achievements of Dr Sun, utilising displays, artefacts, and memorabilia. The house is large and luxurious, and well maintained. The building housing the museum is the Former Residence of Dr Sun Yat-sen in the French Concession area of Shanghai, China, near Fuxing Park to the east.

The Museum is popular, and worth a visit.

Dr Sun Yat-sen lived in this house from 1918 with his wife Soong Ching-ling. After his death, Sun's wife continued to live here until 1937.
