This natural rock formation, aptly named Whale Rocks, is a large chunk of what appears to be a granite type rock, evident by the non-layered appearance and smooth texture of the rock. Granite is a form of igneous rock, or a rock that was formed by the cooling of magma or lava. Obviously there have not been any volcanoes in the North Carolina area for millions of years. This large rock was more than likely deposited by a glacier hundreds of thousands of years ago. Eventually the stream at this location unearthed this rock and through the years eroded the rock into its whale like shape. There is a crevice in the rock formation, and according to park officials, as recent as 10 years ago water flowed through this crevice in the middle of the rock. Increased storm water from development has cut a new channel around the rock.
