The first bridge of Orléans dates back to the Gallic period. He was leading from the current street at Lin to Rue Saint-Marceau. Several others, made of wood like him, succeeded each other in the same place.

Built at the beginning of the 12th century, the bridge of the Tourelles distinguished itself in two ways from its predecessors. Not only was it built of stone, but also, abandoning tradition, it connected the current streets of the Hôtelleries and Saint-Marceau.

The new work spanned the river, resting on islands which then housed a hospice and a chapel.

On the north side, he served the Chatelet; on the south side, it reached the Fort of Tourelles, before which the decisive battle of the end of the siege of 1429 took place.

In the mid-18th century, the construction of the Royal Bridge, now the George V bridge, resulted in the destruction of the islands and the Tourelles bridge.

The Thinat and de Vierzon bridges to the east and the Joffre bridge to the west were built or rebuilt in the 20th century.
