Wismarer Altstadt – UNESCO-Welterbe seit 2002

Mit dem historischen Hafenbecken und der nahezu lückenlos erhaltenen Straßen­rand­bebauung vermittelt die Wismarer Altstadt ein klares Bild einer mittelalterlichen Seehandels­stadt aus der Blütezeit des Städtebundes im 14. Jahrhundert. Wismar ist die einzige in dieser Größe und Geschlossenheit erhaltene Hansestadt im südlichen Ostseeraum. 2002 wurde die Altstadt in die UNESCO-Welterbeliste aufgenommen.

Wismars Stadtsilhouette wird von gewaltigen mittelalterlichen Backsteinkathedralen dominiert: der St.-Georgen-, der St.-Marien- und der St.-Nikolai-Kirche. Sie verkörpern eindrucksvoll die meisterliche Sakralarchitektur des 13. und 14. Jahrhunderts.

Die rasante Entwicklung der Hansestadt Wismar im 13. Jahrhundert spiegelt sich in der umfangreich erhaltenen historischen Bausubstanz wider. Mit Hilfe der UNESCO wurden und werden die alten Häuser und Straßen saniert und für die Nachwelt erhalten.
Die Grube, die vom östlich gelegenen Mühlenteich quer durch die Stadt bis zum Hafen fließt, ist der letzte erhaltene, künstlich angelegte, mittelalterliche Wasserlauf in einer Altstadt Norddeutschlands.

Wismar Old Town - UNESCO World Heritage since 2002

With the historic harbor basin and the almost completely preserved roadside development, Wismar's old town conveys a clear picture of a medieval sea trading town dating back to the heyday of the city union in the 14th century. Wismar is the only Hanseatic city in the southern Baltic region that has been preserved in this size and compactness. In 2002, the old town was included in the UNESCO World Heritage List.

Wismar's skyline is dominated by mighty medieval brick cathedrals: St. George's, St. Mary's and St. Nicholas'. They impressively embody the masterly sacral architecture of the 13th and 14th centuries.

The rapid development of the Hanseatic city of Wismar in the 13th century is reflected in the extensively preserved historic buildings. With the help of UNESCO, the old houses and streets have been restored and preserved for posterity.
The pit, which runs from the east lying mill pond across the city to the harbor, is the last surviving, artificially created, medieval watercourse in an old part of north Germany.
