Next to the Commemorative Permanent Survey Marker #172880 is the rectangular brass plaque, with an embedded photo of someone holding a GPSr in their hands, in the top-left corner. The plaque reads:
Q150 (1859 - 2009) GPS Mark
      Celebrating 150 years of surveying
and providing a spatial future in Queensland

Oxford scholar Henry Schneider arrived in Queensland in 1866 "xx with stories of the wonderful
doings of Australia". He became a surveyor in about 1876 and was one [of] the many surveyors who
opened up the Gold Coast Region in 1883, he undertook the first survey of this part of Broadwater
Park. He was a Magistrate for the Colony, a member of the Royal Society, and an early member of
the Queensland Institute of Surveyors, forerunner to today's Surveying and Spatial Sciences Institute.

	Your Global Positioning system (GPS)
The GPS satellite system uses a constellation of 24+ satellites
orbiting the earth twice a day and sending down data to your GPS
unit. The data from three or more satellites is used to calculate
where it is on the surface of the earth.

The satellites send a signal that is picked up by the GPS receiver.
The GPS uses that information to show where you are.
