Fresh Pond, now the auxiliary reservoir to New Shoreham's water supply, sits in a knoll a whole 78 ft high and about 3000 ft north of the sea itself.

In New Shoreham, north of Fresh Pond, is a historical marker for Fresh Pond that has an elevation of 78 ft engraved as part of the text.

The marker is located near the intersection of Lakeside Avenue and Old Center Road on the southside of the intersection. The marker is in easy view of the road and there is a narrow shoulder to park at.

The marker is a stone that is rough on the sides and smooth where the text is. There appears to be considerable leaching of something - possibly salt - along the bottom and left side.

The text on the marker is as follows:
