Standing atop a concrete base, this fiberglass buffalo (American Bison) is about four feet high. You will see buffalo sculptures throughout Oklahoma, as the American Bison was declared the Oklahoma State Animal in 1972. This sculpture is tinted brown.

It is estimated that at one time, there were as many as 30 million buffalo roaming the land between the Appalachian and Rocky Mountains. Native Americans hunted them for food and their hides. However, the new settlers and hunters began killing them indiscriminately as trophies, and by 1888, there were only 541 by count. Efforts began to protect and preserve this animal, and the first Preserve was established in 1907 in southwestern Oklahoma in what is now known as the Wichita Mountain Wildlife Preserve. With stronger game laws in effect, the buffalo population today is thought to be about 350,000.
