The town of Orbost originally was accessible by paddle steamer. Only in the early 1900's were roads made to make a bit more of a direct route between Melbourne and the East Gippsland region of Victoria. Planning maps for Orbost show that they had planned for a route in from the Princes Highway, from the Snowy River side of town, and an egress, from the more western 'entry'. Which may be why the "M" for Melbourne is plainly on the top, and the same distance on either directional face.
Initially Nicholson Street WAS the Princes Highway, until that was realigned with a new bridge over the Snowy River.
