Located at the far western tip of the island near San Luis Pass are two interconnected public beaches: the San Luis Pass beach and Pointe West beach.

San Luis Pass Beach, about 1.5mi long in total, covers both the NW and NE strips of Galveston island's southern edge. It can only be accessed with 4WD vehicles and the water is too dangerous to swim (due to underlying currents in between the Gulf and the Bay).

Pointe West Beach, however, does not require any special transportation: from one of its two public access parking spots (Beach Access #39 and #40), it is just a short little stroll over a ~400ft long cross-over wooden bridge over the dunes and underlying flora and fauna (including rattlesnakes!) before you get to the sandy area. This ~2mi stretch of beach is not as frequently cleaned of natural debris as other beaches on the island -- nor does it offer any amenities -- but it does guarantee to be "away from the crowds" on busy summer weekends. It also offers a chance to spot Kemp's Ridley and Loggerhead sea turtles nesting in the March through early June timeframe.

Surfing and fishing are permitted year round. There are no permanent lifeguards but security and lifeguards do patrol the area during the summer. Alcohol is prohibited, but vehicle access to this stretch of beach is entirely free -- should you feel the need to drive up all the way from San Luis Beach up to this site. :)
