A 1965 Texas Historical Marker at the grave of William Lane, in Bethel Cemetery, indicates that he was the first "Anglo-American" born in Hunt County, back when the Republic of Texas was still with us.

"Anglo" is often used as a "nice" term for "caucasian" or "white", but not everybody classified as such has Anglo roots. Without genealogical information about Mr. Lane's father, it's difficult to really know if he was truly of Anglo descent, or whether this was just a nice way of saying "He was the first white man born in Hunt County." While the headstone clearly says "1842", the historical marker indicates "1843":

First Anglo-American born in Hunt County, then in Republic of Texas. Birthplace: on South Sulphur, near present Wolfe City. Son of John W. Lane, one of commissioners organizing county.

During Civil War, served in Confederate Army. Later moved to Vansickle community, 4 mi. SW of this spot, where he spent rest of his life. Married first Mary E. Hale. Had 2 children. His second wife was Betty Evans.
