Der Hauptbahnhof ist über einen circa 500 Meter langen und viergleisig ausgeführten Damm mit dem Festland verbunden. Der Damm und die etwa 500 Meter östlich verlaufende Straßenbrücke Landtorbrücke (meist: „Seebrücke“) grenzen den so genannten Kleinen See, der zwischen dem Stadtteil Aeschach und der Insel liegt, vom Bodensee ab. Die Bahnanlagen trennen weiter die Hauptinsel von der Hinteren Insel. Eine Fußgängerbrücke und die Thierschbrücke für den Straßenverkehr stellen die Verbindung über die Gleise her.

Lindau ist der Endpunkt der von München über Kempten kommenden Allgäubahn. Ihr südöstlicher Abschnitt von Kempten nach Lindau wurde 1853 fertig gestellt.

The main railway station is connected to the mainland by an approximately 500-meter long, four-track dam. The dam and the road bridge Landtorbrücke (mostly "Seebrücke"), which runs approximately 500 meters to the east, border the Lake of Constance between the district of Aeschach and the island. The railway lines continue to separate the main island from the back island. A pedestrian bridge and the Thierschbrücke for the road traffic make the connection over the tracks.

Lindau is the end point of the Allgäubahn from Munich via Kempten. Its southeast section from Kempten to Lindau was completed in 1853.
