In Pekin, south of the Tazewell County Courthouse, is the Pekin Public Library.
The library is located at the corner of Broadway Street and S. 4th Street. It is three blocks south of the Tazewell County Courthouse.
The building is a brick-face structure, squarish in appearance. The parking lot is on the west side of the road, and the entrance to the library is on the south side.

1866 – Ladies Library Association organized in Pekin
1883 – Pekin Library Association formally incorporated under state laws
1896 – Pekin Library Association is transferred to city ownership; creating Pekin Public Library
1900 – Mary Gaither wrote Andrew Carnegie requesting library building funds
1900 – George Herget of Pekin donated land for the library building
1902 – Carnegie building completed
1972 – The Dirksen Congressional Center and the Pekin Public Library agree to build a new facility on the site of the old Carnegie building. Salvaged from the old library: stained glass windows, grandfather and grandmother clocks, and the ornamental plaza lamp
2002 – Library acquired space previously housing the Dirksen Center
2014 – Renovation and expansion project
