Founded in 651, the Abbey was at the height of its history between the 9th and 11th centuries, a center of study, culture and development of the internationally renowned arts.
Two successive abbots and the transfer in 672 of the relics of Saint Benedict of Nursia, founder of western monasticism, ensured the radiation of the abbey.
Abbon, considered by his contemporaries as one of the most educated men of his time, brought in writers, historians and poets and developed at the end of the 10th century an abbey school and a scriptorium renowned throughout the western world.
His successor, Gauzlin, developed artistic activity notably by the construction of the porch tower, which was intended as an "example for all Gaul" and which became the symbol of the abbey.
Dispersed in the Revolution, the monks reinvested the site in 1944 and the Benedictine monastic life could then resume its course, punctuated by work and prayers.
From this prestigious abbey only the church is preserved, the monastic buildings having been destroyed in the French Revolution.
Numerous capitals decorate the porch tower of the 11th century as well as the transept and the choir of the basilica. They form a unique iconographic ensemble in the Center Region and constitute a major work of early Romanesque art.
The crypt, built in the second half of the 11th century, is built around a heavy hollow pillar from which arches form a double ambulatory.
This place of silence and contemplation allows the pilgrims to gather and pray in front of the relics of Saint Benedict preserved in the pillar and to which were granted powers of healing at the origin of several miracles.

Fondée en 651 l’Abbaye fut à l’apogée de son histoire entre les IXème et XIème siècles, un centre d’étude, de culture et de développement des arts à la renommée internationale.
Deux abbés successifs ainsi que le transfert en 672 des reliques de Saint-Benoît de Nursie, fondateur du monachisme occidental, assurèrent le rayonnement de l’abbaye.
Abbon, considéré par ses contemporains comme un des hommes les plus instruit de son époque y fit venir écrivains, historiens et poètes et y développa à la fin du Xème siècle une école abbatiale et un scriptorium réputés dans tout le monde occidental.

De cette abbaye prestigieuse seule l’église est conservée, les bâtiments monastiques ayant été détruits à la Révolution Française.
De très nombreux chapiteaux ornent la tour porche du XIème siècle ainsi que le transept et le chœur de la basilique. Ils forment un ensemble iconographique unique dans la Région Centre et constituent une œuvre majeure du début de l’art roman.
La crypte, construite dans la seconde moitié du XIème siècle s’articule autour d’un lourd pilier creux d’où s’épanouissent des arcs formant un double déambulatoire.
Ce lieu de silence et de contemplation permet aux pèlerins de se recueillir et de prier devant les reliques de Saint-Benoît conservées dans le pilier et auxquelles on prêtait des pouvoirs de guérison à l’origine de plusieurs miracles.
