The Charles M. Goddard Center for the Visual and Performing Arts next door, has this beautiful sculpture garden on its premises. The area has numerous figurative and abstract sculpture.
Disc Sun is a large (approximately 8 ft. in diameter) pink granite wheel with a large hole at the center. The back side is engraved with many concentric lines from center to rim. The front has rows of raised strips running in four directions. The center is cut out with a border of polished granite.
The sculptor, Jesus Moroles (9/22/1950 - 6/15/2015) was born in Texas, living in Rockport, when he was tragically killed in an automobile accident while driving to Oklahoma. He was the recipient of the National Medal of Arts in 2008, and the Texas State Arts award in 2011.
Wikipedia reports: While he studied in Italy, Moroles was inspired by the marble-carving techniques he observed. When he returned to Texas, he decided that he would focus on stone as an artistic medium. To cut granite, Moroles used diamond saws. Moroles's works include both polished and natural granite surfaces in what he described as a "harmonious coexistence." He described his works as a "discussion" of how man interacts with nature, and he wanted viewers not only to observe his sculptures but also to touch the different surfaces.
