Located next to the Ardmore armory and the Greater Southwest Historical Museum is a spudder that was operational from 1900 to 1935. It is a portable drilling rig for drilling shallow wells. It uses no derrick. Cables attached to the mast were pulled by teams of mules to operate the drilling bit.
Display of this rig was part of Ardmore's Centennial Rehabilitation Project in 2007. A plaque at the base of the rig reads: "Dedicated to the Oil Producers of Oklahoma / Donated to the Historical and Genealogical Society Carter County Museum by Total Petroleum, Inc. and Total Pipeline Corp. / June 1990.
