"Créé par 5 associations d’anciens combattants : l’Arac, l’UNC, l’Ufac, la Fnaca et les CPG-CATM avec les supports des sections locales, le Mémorial landais se love sur fond de pins des Landes, à proximité de la 2 x 2 voies. De ce point de vue, il est le plus souvent un lieu de visite et de recueillement. Inauguré le 25 mars 2000 par Pierre Masseret, secrétaire d’État à la défense et aux anciens combattants, ce mémorial est devenu à la même date un lieu de rencontre et d’hommage aux 108 Landais morts pour la France au cours de la guerre d’Algérie et des combats de Tunisie et du Maroc.
Ce 10e anniversaire interassociatif du Souvenir de la commémoration de ce mémorial landais rassemblait, outre les autorités, 140 drapeaux et plus de 450 personnes issues du monde combattant et des familles des victimes mortes pour la France. Dans son allocution, Marc Bibes, président du mémorial et aussi de l’Udac, relatait les opérations en Algérie qui, depuis, ont été reconnues « guerre ».
« Cette guerre a marqué toute une génération que les anciens combattants d’Algérie-Tunisie-Maroc ne veulent pas oublier, c’est la raison de ce rassemblement aujourd’hui à Pontonx. Notre devoir est d’honorer et rendre hommage à nos camarades tombés dans ce lointain pays et pour la France. » Et comme le disait Bernard Subsol le 25 mars 2000 au cours de l’inauguration : « Ce monument sera un lieu de mémoire, de souvenirs et de recueillement pour les combattants d’Afrique du Nord mais aussi pour les nouvelles générations qui pourront découvrir une page de l’histoire de notre pays, qu’il leur faudra protéger. »"
