Over 50 guitars are located in the Guitar Gallery: The Quest for Volume within the Museum of Pop Culture. One of them is a 1850s Double Bass. A nearby placard reads:

In the 1800s, the double bass's boom became a popular sound

No one knows who invented the double bass, though many have claimed the honor. Within 200 years of the advent of the music scene, the stand-up acoustic bass had become a staple of modern symphony _______. During the 18th and early 19th centuries, the bass gained some popularity as a solo instrument.

The largest lowest-tuned instrument in the violin family, its enormous size generated plenty of volume, but by the 1920s, an acoustic bass could no longer hold its own in the raucous Jazz Age music.
