This oak tree was planted from an acorn harvested from the Civil War battlefields of Virginia. It was planted here on the west side of the AL State Capitol at Montgomery in 1893.

A plaque at the base of the tree reads as follows:

"This Laurel Oak tree
from battlefields of Virginia, 1861-1865
planted by Gov Thomas C. Jones, 1893"
