The Eider Barrage (German: Eidersperrwerk) is Germany’s largest coastal protection structure. The protection from storm surges by the North Sea is its main purpose.

Construction work began in 1967, the barrage was opened on 20 March 1973.

Two separate rows each of five gates form the barrage. Each of the 40 metres long gates allow the water of the river Eider to flow into the North Sea when the tide ebbs, respectively the North Sea water flows into the river Eider when tide rises.

Next to the barrage is a 75 metre long and 14 metre wide lift lock (Kammerschleuse). So that ships pass into the North Sea from the adjacent harbour at the city of Tönning resp. the river Eider.

The Drawbridge enables cars as well as bicycles and people drive/go across the lock, which use the ships to pass the flood barrage.
