This sign of history created by the United daughters of the Confederacy preserves the history of an 1861 forge that operated a mile east of this point from 1861-1866, when it was swept away by a flood. Some parts of the old forge are still visible.
The sign reads as follows:
"WILLIAM & OWENS FORGE
1861
Thomas Hennington Bowen, farmer, merchant and County Commissioner living on Eastern Valley Road, operated a forge one mile east of here on Roupes Creek below a wide shoals, with partner Thomas Lightfoot Williams. Castings, including hardware and more materials, were sent to the Confederate quartermaster in Selma both by wagon and rail. It escaped detection during the federal raid on the larger Tannehill furnaces March 31, 1865. Destroyed by a flood in June 1866, some parts of the old forge are still visible.
