Montezuma Well is a unit of the Montezuma Castle National Monument in Rimrock, Arizona. The well is a large sink hole containing 15 million gallons of water and releasing 1.5 million gallons per day. The well was a populated center of agriculture from approximately 400 AD through 1400 AD. The native population used all available resources to survive and, as the sign points out, this native walnut could be used as a source of food, paint, cloth and hair dye. The tree is inside the well area and provides shade as well as the byproducts.
