A bust of Col. Chaves can be found in the atrium of New Mexico's State Capitol building. Beyond his military duties, he was a long-serving elected government representative.

The plaque below the bust reads:
Col. J. Francisco Chaves was born in Los Padillas, Bernalillo County, New Mexico, June 27, 1833. Served as Lieutenant Colonel in Union Army under Kit Carson, was assassinated at 7 o'clock on the evening of Saturday November 26, 1904 at Pinos Wells Torrence County, New Mexico.
