FR L’église nouvelle a été érigée en 1876, sur des fondations datant du Xème siècle. Sa construction a connu de nombreuses évolutions au fil du temps.

En 1052, l’église « Sanctus Martinus de Palud Majori » est concédée aux chanoines d’Arles par Guillaume, Vicomte de Marseille.

En 1061, Raimbaud, archevêque d’Arles, en fait donation au Chapitre de Saint Trophime. Lorsque l’on examine l’état originel du clocher, on remarque une porte haute accessible au moyen d’une échelle ou d’un escalier en bois. Il reste des vestiges des meurtrières en pierre taillée, qui témoignent d’un rôle défensif des lieux. Sur la façade Nord, on observe de plus une baie surmontée d’un blason. Le tout concourt à affirmer que l’édifice était une tour de garde, l’église primitive se trouvant à côté de la tour.

Au XVIIème siècle, lors de la grande peste, se construit un deuxième clocher sur l’ancienne tour de garde. Puis, en 1720, un oratoire s’édifie. Il disparaît entre 1929 et 1933 environ. En 1790, le Chapitre d’Arles nomme un curé pour les 800 habitants de Saint-Martin de Crau de la Palud : c’est l’une des premières paroisses rétablies par le Concordat. L’église nouvelle date de 1876.

Au XIXème siècle, l’ouverture de la baie détruit les proportions de l’église primitive. La construction d’appentis contre le bas côté obstrue l’entrée du clocher.

En 1992, la rénovation entreprise par la commune redonne au clocher sa vocation de tour accessible. A partir de 1995, d’autres travaux de rénovation sont entrepris : réfection de la façade, des vitraux et du mur de la nef ; soutènement des murs et du recouvrement, éclairage des façades…
EN The new church was erected in 1876, on foundations dating from the 10th century. Its construction has undergone many changes over time.

In 1052, the church "Sanctus Martinus of Palud Majori" is granted to the canons of Arles by Guillaume, Vicomte of Marseilles.

In 1061, Raimbaud, Archbishop of Arles, donated to the Chapter of Saint Trophime. When one examines the original condition of the bell tower, one notices a high door accessible by means of a ladder or a wooden staircase. There are remains of the loopholes in carved stone, which testify to a defensive role of the places. On the northern façade, there is also a bay with a coat of arms. The whole concurs to affirm that the edifice was a watchtower, the primitive church being next to the tower.

In the 17th century, during the Great Plague, a second bell tower was built on the old guard tower. Then, in 1720, an oratory was built. It disappears between 1929 and 1933 approximately. In 1790, the Chapter of Arles appointed a parish priest for the 800 inhabitants of Saint-Martin de Crau de la Palud. It was one of the first parishes re-established by the Concordat. The new church dates from 1876.

In the XIXth century, the opening of the bay destroyed the proportions of the primitive church. The construction of lean-tos on the low side obstructs the entrance to the bell tower.
