The grave of Carl Edward Sagan is marked by polished black horizontal headstone to the right of his mother Rachel Molly Gruber Sagan and father Samuel Sagan. The headstone is inscribed:

Description:

Carl Sagan was born in Brooklyn NY. He and his family and moved to Rahway NJ when he was 14 years old. He attended Rahway High School and the University of Chicago when he was 16 years old. He earned a B.A. in 1954, and a B.S. degree in physics in 1955, a M.S. degree in physics in 1956, and a Ph.D. in astronomy 1960. He taught at Harvard University before coming to Cornell University in Ithaca, NY at the invitation of astronomer Thomas Gold. At Cornell he did important research in exobiology by proving the basic building blocks of proteins, amino acids, can be produced from basic chemicals by the effects of radiation.

Carl Sagan's career as an author and the preeminent science communicator of his era is legendary. In 1994 he was awarded the Public Welfare Medal, the highest award of the National Academy of Sciences for "distinguished contributions in the application of science to the public welfare." Carl Sagan is probably best known for writing and narrating the 13 part Emmy Award winning TV series Cosmos along with writing the companion book Cosmos. He also was awarded the Pulitzer Prize for General Non-Fiction in 1978 for his book The Dragons of Eden.
