Entworfen wurde der Obelisk mit dem Titel "Obelisk Of Tutankhamun" von der Künstlerin Rita McBride, die Rektorin der Düsseldorfer Kunstakademie ist.
Der Obelisk wiegt rund 1,6 Tonnen. Er hat einen innen hohlen Stahlkern, der mit dünnen Schichten aus Karbonfaser umwickelt wurde. Er steht auf vier Stahlkugeln, die auf einem Betonsockel montiert sind. Der "Obelisc of Tutankhamun" soll eine Metapher des allumfassenden Prinzips geometrischer Ordnung sein. In ihrem künstlerischen Werk setzt sich die amerikanische Bildhauerin und international bekannte Installationskünstlerin mit Fragen von Architektur und Design auseinander.
Der Obelisk wurde am 7. Juli 2017 auf dem Breslauer Platz in Köln errichtet. Er ist eine Schenkung der Stiftung Kunst, Kultur und Soziales der Sparda-Bank West an die Stadt Köln. Der Obelisk wird in die Sammlung des Museums Ludwig aufgenommen.
The obelisk was designed with the title "Obelisk Of Tutankhamun" by the artist Rita McBride. Rita McBride is the rector of the Düsseldorf Art Academy.
The obelisk weighs around 1.6 tons. It has an inner hollow steel core, which has been wrapped with thin layers of carbon fiber. It stands on four steel balls mounted on a concrete base. The "Obelisc of Tutankhamun" is to be a metaphor of the all-embracing principle of geometric order. In her artistic work, the American sculptress and internationally renowned installation artist deals with questions of architecture and design.
The Obelisk was erected on 7th July 2017 on the Breslauer Platz in Cologne. It is a donation of the foundation art, culture and social affairs of Sparda-Bank West to the city of Cologne. The obelisk is included in the collection of the Museum Ludwig.
