Der Tegernsee liegt rund 50 km südlich von München in den Bayerischen Alpen und ist ein Ausflugs- und Fremdenverkehrsziel. Er zählt zu den saubersten Seen Bayerns, da bereits in den 1960er Jahren eine durchgängige Ringkanalisation um den See geschaffen wurde.
Der See liegt im Landschaftsschutzgebiet Schutz des Tegernsees und Umgebung. Er ist Eigentum des Freistaates Bayern und wird verwaltet durch die Bayerische Verwaltung der staatlichen Schlösser, Gärten und Seen.
Während der letzten, als Würm-Kaltzeit bezeichneten Eiszeit, reichte die Tegernseer Zunge des Inn-Gletschers mit einem Maximum vor etwa 20.000 Jahren bis weit nach Norden in die Ebene hinein. Durch seine erosiven Kräfte schuf der Gletscher ein Zungenbecken, das sich später mit Wasser füllte. Die langgestreckte Form des Tegernsees lässt diese glazialmorphologische Entstehung deutlich erkennen.

The Tegernsee is located 50 km south of Munich in the Bavarian Alps and is an excursion and tourism destination. It is one of the cleanest lakes in Bavaria, since already in the 1960s a continuous ring canalization around the lake was created.
The lake is protected in the landscape protection area of Tegernsee and the surrounding area. It is the property of the Freistaat Bavaria and is managed by the Bavarian administration of the state castles, gardens and lakes.
During the last glacial period known as the Würm cold period, the Tegernse tongue of the Inn glacier reached a maximum of 20,000 years ago, far north to the plain. Through its erosive forces, the glacier created a tongue that later filled with water. The long-stretched form of Lake Tegern clearly shows this glacial morphological development.
