According to navel records, HMS Forte was launched by the Royal Navy on 29 May 1858 and had a displacement of 3,456 tons. This frigate which was part sail and part steam engine had 51 guns. The ship was de-commissioned and remaind at Sheerness docks. On 23 November 1905 the ship was accidentaly destroyed by fire.
This figurehead, with the permission of the Medway Ports Authority, is an identical replica of the original, has been mounted and built into the sea defence wall in the town.
This figurehead, a reminder and memorial is for the people and visitors of our history at these docks.
