The monument is located in the airpark of the National Air Force Museum of Canada, off RCAF Road in east Trenton.
The monument has an engraved image of the RCAF WD badge at its top.
The inscription "We serve that men may fly" may sound sexist, but it is true. During World War II, women were not allowed into the Armed Services. In order to circumvent that, and allow men to take on front-line duties, the RCAF Women's Division, Canadian Women's Army Corps and the Women's Royal Canadian Naval Service were formed.
In all over 17,00o women enrolled between 1941 and 1946. They carried out a full spectrum of duties from mechanics to piloting bombers and transports to the European theatre.
The WD was disbanded in 1946. Starting in 1947, women were enrolled directly into the RCAF.
