This defensive structure, complete with a moat was built by the British to defend the Malayan Island of Penang from Napoleonic attack by the French & Pirates.

The Castle in Penang known then as the pearl of the Orient, is Set close to the Esplanade and Penang Clocktower, Named after Marquis Charles Cornwallis. The walls are topped by Cannons facing the sea.

"Situated on Penang’s north-eastern coast, a stroll along the privately-managed Fort Cornwallis’ perimeters will take you about 10 minutes. It is a surreal experience to hear the 1812 Overture playing over the speaker system while a Malaysian man dressed in full British regalia stands at the gate. Inside the fort is a variety of vaguely-informative exhibits." Text Source: (visit link)

"Captain Sir Francis Light soon took possession of Penang Island from Sultan Muhammad Jiwa Zainal Adilin of Kedah on 11 August 1786 and the first fort was built of niblong (pine trunks) here in the same year. He named it after the Governor-General of Bengal, Charles Cornwallis.

During Colonel R.T. Farquhar’s term as Governor (1804), Indian convict labour was used to rebuild the fort in stone and the same size, shape and layout as the original. The fort was completed in 1810 and was intended as a defense against pirates, Kedah and the French. It was surrounded by a moat 20' wide and 6' deep. The moat was filled in during the 1920's malaria epidemic.
