"FRYXELL OVERLOOK
Roald Fryxell (1934-1974) was Associate Professor of Anthropology at Washington State University, Pullman, Washington.
Early in his professional career, he was employed at Ginkgo Petrified Forest State Park. While there, in addition to his regular duties, he continued his research in Quaternary stratigraphy and developed a novel explanation for the near-perfect preservation of wood structure in logs found imbedded in lavas of the area.
Among his various archaeological projects, perhaps the most significant was the Marmes Rockshelter, a short distance downstream from Palouse Falls. Here Fryxell discovered bones and artifacts that proved to be 10,000 to 12,000 years old, much older than any other well-documented human skeletal material found up to that time in the Western Hemisphere.
Dr. Fryxell’s achievements and honors were numerous. In honor of his contributions, the Commission officially named “Fryxell Overlook” on March 19, 1979."
