The first French tank originated in a meeting between Colonel Estienne and the engineer Brillié of the firm Schneider-Creusot, which gave rise to a concrete project in December 1915.

At the beginning of January 1916, Joffre authorized the continuation of the project and on 31 January requested the purchase of 400 of what were then called the "land battleships" armed with a 75 mm gun.

The tank was presented as an elongated large body lying on a chassis consisting of two steel rails joined by cross-members carrying the engine at the front and at the rear the transmission. This chassis rests, by means of springs, on two trolleys, respectively three and four rollers rolling on the track. The front trolley supported a tension pulley. In its upper course, between the rear sprocket and the tension pulley, the track, composed of 34 skids, was supported by rollers mounted between two flanges.

Length: 6.32m, width: 2.05m, height: 2.3m, weight: 13.5 tons, power: 70cv (schneider engine with 4 cylinders), speed: 6 km / h maximum, tank: 600 liters (range: 6 to 7 hours ), Crew: 6 men.
