[FR] L'Impératrice Richarde, femme de Charles le Gros, voulait fonder un monastère de chanoinesses pour les filles de la noblesse de l'époque. Ayant prié sur le tombeau de Sainte Odile, elle eût une vision qui l'engageait à bâtir son monastère à l'endroit où elle verrait une Ourse avec ses petits.
La légende indique qu'un jour où l'impératrice se promenait au bord du ruisseau de l'Andlau, elle vit un ours qui creusait une fosse dans la terre. La légende dit que c'était pour enterrer un ourson mort. Richarde décida d'ériger l'abbaye à cet endroit. En souvenir de l'origine du monastère, on entretenait ensuite dans l'enclos de l'abbaye un ou plusieurs ours. Chaque boulanger qui venait vendre du pain sur le marché de la ville était tenu de donner, chaque semaine, un pain pour nourrir l'animal. A la suite d'un accident où un enfant aurait été dévoré par l'un d'eux, les animaux furent remplacés par un ours sculpté en grès plus inoffensif.
A l'heure actuelle, cet statue d'ours a été déposée dans la crypte de l'abbaye qui est située sur le trou supposé creusé par l'animal.
[EN] The Église Saint Pierre et Saint Paul was founded as the church of one of the oldest and most important abbeys in the Alsace. In 862 Charles le Gros, the German Emperor and the great-grandson of Charlemagne, married Richarde of Eleón, a daughter of a noble family of the region. The devout Richarde decided to build an abbey at Andlau, at that time a wild, undeveloped forest region.
The new abbey was presented to the Holy See and became a dependency of the Pope, and the bear became the special symbol for Richarde’s abbey. In fact, a live bear was kept on the abbey ground for years. Apparently an accident in the 15th century put an end to the practice. The bears were replaced by a more inoffensive sandstone statue.
Today, this statue is kept in the Abbaye crypt and is located above the hole supposedly dug by the animal.
