Chartered on October 6, 1926, Coleman Royal Canadian Legion Branch #9 was the first Legion to be chartered in Alberta.

If you're wondering why the first Legion in Alberta should be Branch Number Nine, there is a very good reason for this. When inaugurated, the branch was offered the number ONE, but declined it in favor of NINE to honor the nine inaugural members.

To the east of the building is a memorial park which contains the Coleman Legion Cenotaph. It is quite impressive considering Coleman is a small community with a population of approximately 1,075 residents.

The park is very well maintained by the Legion. The cenotaph stands about 12 feet including the statue of a WWI soldier with bowing head. The cenotaph is made of natural stone with four sided that tapers up and flatten where the soldier stands.

The inscription on the Cenotaph reads:

In Memory of Those
Whose Names Endure

The Great War
1914-1918

The World War
1939-1945

Korea
1950 - 1953

Erected by
The Citizens of Coleman

They Died
That We May Live
