Der Turm wurde vermutlich Ende des 12. Jahrhunderts errichtet und diente lange Zeit als Bergfried und später als Teil der Stadtbefestigung. Nachdem die Stadt Chemnitz die Gerichtsbarkeit selbst übernommen hatte, diente der Turm bis etwa 1900 als Gefängnis.

Während der Zeit als Gefängnis saßen unter anderem August Bebel [Wikipedia: (visit link) ] und Karl Stülpner [Wikipedia: (visit link) ] ein.

The tower was probably built at the end of the 12th century and served for a long time as a castle keep and later as part of the city fortification. After the city of Chemnitz took the jurisdiction itself, the tower served as a prison until about 1900.
