County of statue: Greene County
Location of statue: %th St. & Main St., atop the county courthouse, Carrollton
Statue created: 1891

I have seen a lot of Lady Justice statues, and have the sword; some pointed out, some pointed down, some brandished threateningly; and all have the scales of justice being either held out or held aloft.
This justice is standing tall, in Greek or Roman robe, with sword in her proper right hand point on the ground and held in parrellel to her body. Her proper left hand is placed, fingers curled, upon her breast. (no scales in sight)

"Lady Justice is an allegorical personification of the moral force in judicial systems. Her attributes are a blindfold, a balance, and a sword. She often appears as a pair with Prudentia, who holds a mirror and a snake. Lady Justice is also known as Iustitia or Justitia after Latin: Iustitia, the Roman goddess of Justice, who is equivalent to the Greek goddess Themis and Dike.

"The personification of justice balancing the scales dates back to the Goddess Maat, and later Isis, of ancient Egypt. The Hellenic deities Themis and Dike were later goddesses of justice. Themis was the embodiment of divine order, law, and custom, in her aspect as the personification of the divine rightness of law." ~ Wikipedia

"The courthouse itself is the most important building of the District and is one of three government buildings in the District. It a a rock-faced, coursed, white Berea limestone building 80 by 125 feet, two stories high capped by a mansard roof with straight sides. Above this is a hundred foot high central stone bell tower. There are two low decorative parapet gables on both the east and west sides, and one more prominent gable on the north and south over the main entries. The north gable has a terra-cotta statue of Justice above it. The courthouse is in the Richardson Romanesque style and was built 1891-92." ~ NRHP Nomination Form
