Ash Meadows National Widlife Refuge is located about 40 miles from anywhere in the Nevada desert. As such, it is the perfect refuge for the last known school of Devil's Hole Pupfish , one of six species of pupfish, of which the Tecopa Pupfish is already extinct.

The small (1 inch) fish is remarkable in that it has adapted to the harsh conditions of the open desert. It can live in water temperatures from 32 to 116 degrees F and depths as little as one half inch.

The Devils Hole Pupfish is critically endangered, with annual counts ranging from 80 to as low a 45. Despite being protected, no-one knows why the numbers aren't increasing.

To access the Devil's Hole pool observation area, Enter the refuge on Ash Meadows/Bob Ruud Memorial Highway. Watch for signs to the Devils Hole. Drive north on a dirt road for about 5 miles then bear right on Point of Rocks/Devils Hole Road. You must park on the road and walk in (about 200 meters). There is an enclosed observation deck and explanatory signs.
