Incorporated in 1912, Assiniboia was named after the old district of Assiniboia that was formed in the North West Territories in 1882. The name Assiniboia comes from the Assiniboia First Nations. Its meaning translates to "one who cooks with stones".
Assiniboia is an Agricultural service centre for South Central Saskatchewan.
