The Newell Growers Association is a co-op with 150 members (as of 2009) who manage this grain elevator and allow access seven days a week for growers to get their crop finished as late in the year as possible. An educational online
article by the Klamath Basin Water Crisis organization highlights the background of this co-op. It formed in 1954 and over the years saw steady growth in wheat grain production but in 2001 Klamath Basin farmers suffered a debilitating and catastrophic loss -- the federal government shut off water to hundreds of thousands of acres of farmland in the Basin because of low lake levels from Upper Klamath Lake -- this was in turn directed by water rights from local Native American tribes. Many farmers and ranchers couldn't deal from the fallout and went bankrupt. Fortunately, the Newell Growers Association recovered through the water crisis and still survives today.
There was no activity when I drove by and visited but then again, it was in April, so I would assume in the next month or two will see some action from local farmers delivering their grain crops.
