Outside the Norfolk Island National Park, a series of small and scattered public reserves provide the largest areas of relatively intact habitat for native flora and fauna.
Selwyn Reserve stretches over 1km along the western coastline of Norfolk Island. The seaward boundary of the reserve is made up of steep and uniform cliffs up to 80 metres in height that have been formed by the erosion of the deeply weathered basalt by ocean currents. The narrow coastal reserve stretches back from the cliffs 300m at its widest point.
The southern cliff top section of the reserve is fairly flat and contains a popular picnic spot (Puppy's Point) in a park-like setting of open Norfolk Island pine ARAUCARIA HETEROPHYLLA and white oak LAGUNARIA PATERSONIA forest with a couch understorey.
Most of the reserve's native vegetation of conservation significance occurs in patches along the steep cliff edges or along the steeper sections of the creek lines. The cliff edges are dominated by native flax PHORIUM TENAX, wind pruned white oaks and young Norfolk Island pines. Cattle have been excluded from a strip of forest along Selwyn Bridge Creek and hence this area now contains a diversity of native and endemic species.
