In the transept of the church is the large sundial that two famous astronomers, the German Wolfgang Sartorius von Waltershausen and the Danish Christian Peters traced on the pavement in 1839.

Thanks to the abbot Giovan Francesco Corvaja the plan to have a sundial was able to be carried out.
It received great praise when it was completed in 1841, for its size as well as for the value of the materials used, but especially for the precision and boldness of the calculations.
The gnomon, ie the hole in the vault of the transept, is placed at 23 meters, 91 centimeters and 7 millimeters in height.
On the marble band, which extends for approximately 40 meters between the two chapels of St. Benedict of Norcia and San Nicholas of Bari at the two ends of the transept, the hours, days and months, as well as the various zodiac signs are marked off.
