On the night of 2 on June 3, 1942 were 195 bombers of the Royal Air Force, including Lancasters and Hampdens, sent to bomb the Krupp factories in Essen. In this attack 14 planes were lost.
The Hampden AT154 was at 23:26 pm deaparted from Balderton airport in county Nottinghamshire in England. At 1:06 pm Hampden was on the outbound flight to Essen shot by a German Messerschmitt Bf 110 night fighter from airfield Leeuwarden out of the sky and crashed into the IJsselmeer, about one kilometer east of Medemblik.
