Urunga town is right beside the coast, but the 'old' Pacific Highway was a couple of kilometres inland (the NEW-current bypass Pacific Highway is about 5 kilometres inland.) This sign is right beside a bend of the Kalang River, while Urunga also has the Bellingen River flow past it as it empties into the ocean. Urunga is known as a fishing town, with bream being a popular catch.

So it no wonder that a wooden skiff has been used as a 'symbol' of the riverside and coastal town of Urunga.

The covered wooden boat is hanging above a WIDE panoramic vista photo of the Kalang River. It is suspended by shackles, from a length of railway line, on square metal posts which make up the square frame for this 'Welcome to Urunga' or 'Visit Urunga …next time' sign.

This is a wooden skiff, about 4 metres long, and would be 5 metres off of the ground, and as long as I can remember (more than 20 years) has been hanging at the northern entrance on the Pacific Highway. (As has the one at the southern entrance!) The bottom of the boat has been painted yellow and has a permanent cover over it.
