This information board is on the site of a former coal mine that has been landscaped, returned to nature and opened as the public Oakwell Hall Country Park.

The information board tells us that "wild flowers have been squeezed out of many meadows by modern farming methods. At Oakwell we manage our fields with wildlife in mind - they are now alive with flowers and insects."

The board has pictures of some of the plants and creatures that can be seen at this site.

Nearby is an 18 feet high sculpture of a fern that also grows here.

The land here can be very waterlogged and indeed the coal mine was one of the wettest in the UK. The photograph of the sign shows just how wet the ground can get.
