A beautifully sculpted, marble, canopied stoup for holding holy water is the first sight visitors see as they enter the Palermo Cathedral. The 15' high stoup is flush up against a support pillar behind the pews. The stoup has a finial with a female figure at the top. The canopy is intricately carved with wreath bunting and cherub faces. The main design is a relief sculpture of clergy and parishioners gathered around a baptismal font and below this a person being baptized while a group of people observe.

The stoup is attributed to Domenico Gagini of the late 15th century. It has recently been restored.
Approximate Age of Artefact: 1475
